The PR Problem

Do cyclists have a PR problem? If there is any truth to today's Pearls Before Swine comic strip, then yeah, maybe we do.

I've seen that arrogance in some cyclists. In the heat of the moment on the road, when asserting lane position, I'm sure I've come off that way a few times myself. It's good to realize that each of us is an ambassador for cycling and to behave accordingly.

Hey Doohickie,

You're not alone in being spurred to write by that comic strip. Citizen Rider has a good post on it up right now too.

We can't afford to make distinctions between types of cyclists, because motorists never will, so all we can do is advocate and educate other cyclists as best we can, and as you say, be good ambassadors ourselves.

Likewise, we cyclists need to work a little harder distinguishing between the many many cautious and considerate automobile operators and those few who display hostility to us.

It is natural to remember the the annoying ones and forget all the ones who were not.

When I saw you left a comment, Chipseal, I was curious what you were going to say. That wasn't even close to what I imagined, but is a very good point.

Yeah, I need to keep you on your toes! ;)
