my first guess is Santa, but then that seems a little too obvious....hhhmmmm????

YEP. TOO OBVIOUS. (The ALL CAPS is a reference to how a book character's words are depicted.)

I'm stumped. But, I like the game.
Actually, I have a vague memory of a line in one of the Harry Potter's being similar to that. But, I don't think it was exact.

Nope.

Hint: The author was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.

Okay. I'm guessing the author is Terry Pratchett, and the book might be "Good Omen".

Here's the quote I liked:
"People who didn't need people needed people around to know that they were the kind of people who didn't need people." -- (Terry Pratchett, Maskerade)

Now the question is: 5 points for what, exactly?

You're pretty close, Heidi. Terry Pratchett is correct. The quote is spoken in The Hogfather by the character Death. In the book, Death fills in for the Hogfather, Pratchett's version of Santa Claus. Death's words always APPEAR IN ALL CAPS WITHOUT QUOTATION MARKS.

So you get the 5 points Heidi.

But I'm not telling you what they're for. ;-)
